2026 Above the Law Rankings: The Biggest Movers

Rankings matter less than most applicants think. Price matters more. But not all rankings measure the same thing, and the difference can be stark.

Above The Law (ATL) ranks schools on one thing: what happens after graduation. By that measure, Chicago just took No. 1. Stanford, ranked No. 1 by U.S. News, sits at No. 16.

Top Schools on the Move

Chicago reclaims the No. 1 spot after ranking No. 3 last year. It has been here before, topping the ATL rankings in 2018 and 2021, but its return is worth understanding.

According to U.S. News, Chicago is tied with Yale at No. 2. In the ATL rankings, however, Yale sits at No. 5. U.S. News ranks Stanford No. 1 overall, but ATL places it at No. 16.

ATL is blunt about why. Prestige, faculty resources, and selectivity play no role in its methodology. Employment outcomes do.

Below are the top 10 law schools in Above The Law’s latest rankings:

Cornell’s six-spot drop is the top-ten story. Vanderbilt’s four-spot climb tells the opposite story: a school that wasn’t mentioned alongside the T14 in years past is now ranked No. 6.

Biggest Climbers

BYU jumping 14 spots and William & Mary climbing 13 aren’t surprises in this system. They’re schools that outperform their prestige in actual placement. Their employment outcomes drove their rise, not brand recognition.

Biggest Drops

Houston and Howard dropping 12 spots each reflects weaker Class of 2025 outcomes, not an overnight institutional decline. Illinois’s falling 10 spots is the more surprising story: a school that jumped 25 spots in 2025 gave much of that gain back a year later.

In and Out

Florida State and George Washington fell off the list entirely, a steeper fall than any point drop. Arizona and Pittsburgh have entered the ATL rankings for the first time.

• Quality Jobs Score (40%): BigLaw and federal clerkships
• Employment Score (30%): full-time, bar-required roles only
• Projected Cost (10%): tuition plus regional cost of living
• First-Time Bar Passage (10%)
• SCOTUS Clerks and Federal Judgeships (5% each)

Seventy percent of the score is based on employment outcomes. That’s why this list looks nothing like U.S. News.

What to Do With This

If BigLaw or federal clerkships are your goal, ATL may be the more useful list. Schools that rank significantly higher here than in U.S. News are worth a second look. Their graduates are outperforming their reputation in the job market, and that gap often shows up in scholarship offers, too.
